Pool Closing and Opening Chemical Kits: What’s Inside
A closing kit is the most common thing we hand across the counter in September and October, and it is also the product customers understand the least. Most people know it as the box you buy when you close the pool. Very few could tell you what the four bottles inside actually do, which is how a perfectly good kit ends up half used in a garage while the pool underneath the cover turns green anyway.
We have been selling and using these kits in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky since 1966. What follows is what is really in one, what each part is for, the order that actually matters, and where a standard kit falls short of what an Ohio winter asks of it. The short version
- A closing kit almost always contains four things: an oxidizer or shock, a winter algaecide, a stain and scale preventer, and a clarifier or enzyme.
- Kits are sized by gallons of water, not by how long the pool stays closed, and a Cincinnati pool sits covered roughly six months.
- Order matters more than brand. Balance the water, shock it, wait for free chlorine to fall back to about 1 to 3 ppm, then add the algaecide.
- Never leave a chlorine floater in a closed pool. It parks in one spot under the cover and can bleach a vinyl liner.
- Pool antifreeze goes in the plumbing lines only. It never goes in the pool water, and automotive antifreeze never goes anywhere near a pool.
What is actually in a pool closing chemical kit?
Most closing kits hold four things: a shock or oxidizer, a winter algaecide, a stain and scale preventer, and often a clarifier or enzyme. Some add a floating winter pill. The kit is sized by pool volume, so the label tells you the gallons it treats, not the months it covers.
The shock does the heavy lifting. It burns off the organic load sitting in the water at the end of the season so the algaecide is not immediately fighting a backlog of sweat, sunscreen, pollen and leaf tannin. The winter algaecide is usually a polyquat formula, which is the one we recommend for closings because it does not foam and it holds up over a long dormant stretch better than the cheap alternatives. Copper based algaecides work, but in the wrong water they stain, and staining a liner is a bad trade.
The stain and scale preventer is the one people skip, and it is the one that quietly protects the surface. It holds dissolved metals and excess calcium in suspension so they do not plate out on the walls and floor over a winter of nobody circulating anything. The clarifier or enzyme is the least critical of the four. It gives you a cleaner spring opening by breaking down oils and fine debris while the water sits. If a kit skips one component, this is usually the one, and that is a defensible choice.
Is a standard closing kit enough for a Cincinnati winter?
Usually yes for the pool itself, with one caveat. Kits are sold by gallonage, not by climate. A Greater Cincinnati pool is typically covered from mid October to late April, so the chemistry has to hold for about six months of freeze and thaw rather than a short dormant season.
The thing that makes our winters hard on a closed pool is not the cold. It is the cycling. We do not freeze in November and stay frozen. We get a hard freeze, then a week in the forties, then rain, then another freeze. Every one of those swings moves water, works at the cover, and gives algae a brief window whenever the water warms and the light gets through. A kit designed around a single quiet dormant season is being asked to do a bit more work here than the label imagines.
In practice that means two things. Do not stretch a kit across a pool bigger than the box is rated for, and get the cover right, because no chemical compensates for a cover that lets sunlight and debris through all winter. The kit and the cover are one system. We would rather sell the correct kit size and a cover that fits than watch somebody fight a green opening in April.
What order do you add closing chemicals in?
Balance the water first, then shock, then wait for free chlorine to drop to roughly 1 to 3 ppm before adding the winter algaecide. High chlorine oxidizes algaecide and wastes it. Add the stain and scale preventer with the balanced water, and lower the water level and cover last.
This is the single most common mistake we see, and it is an expensive one because it is invisible. People open the box, pour everything in on the same afternoon, cover the pool and drive off. The shock is at full strength when the algaecide goes in, the chlorine chews up a good share of that algaecide within hours, and the pool spends the winter defended by a fraction of what the owner paid for. It looks identical on the day. You find out in April.
The sequence that works is unglamorous. Balance first: pH in the 7.2 to 7.6 range, total alkalinity 80 to 120 ppm, and calcium hardness in the 200 to 400 ppm range, which around here usually means adding calcium rather than removing it. Then shock and let the pump run. Then come back the next day, test, and add the algaecide once free chlorine has settled down. One more rule that belongs here: take the chlorine floater out. A floater left under a cover stops moving, settles against one section of wall or one step, and sits there for six months at high concentration. On a vinyl liner that means a bleached patch or worse. It is the kind of damage nobody connects to the closing until they are pricing a liner replacement in the spring.
What comes in a pool opening kit, and is it different?
An opening kit contains similar categories with a different emphasis: shock, algaecide, a clarifier or enzyme, and frequently a metal sequestrant. Closing chemistry is built to hold water stable while nothing circulates. Opening chemistry is built to recover water that has already sat for six months.
The practical difference is the sequestrant. When you refill in the spring and start moving water again, any metal in the fill water or in the pool suddenly meets fresh chlorine, and that is exactly when staining happens. A sequestrant added early in the opening holds those metals in solution until they filter out. Skipping it is how people end up with a rust colored shadow on a step that was clean when they closed.
The other difference is the pace. A closing is a single sequence you complete in a day or two. An opening is a week of running the filter, testing, correcting and testing again while the water clears. An opening kit does not shorten that week. How do you know which kit size fits your pool?
Kits are rated in gallons, commonly up to 7,500, 15,000, 24,000 and 35,000. Calculate your volume before you buy: length times width times average depth times 7.5 for a rectangle, or diameter squared times average depth times 5.9 for a round above ground pool.
Most people guess, and most people guess low, because a pool looks smaller than it is. A common Cincinnati backyard rectangle at sixteen by thirty two feet with an average depth of five feet is right around 19,000 gallons, which means the 15,000 gallon kit is not enough and the 24,000 gallon kit is correct. A twenty four foot round above ground pool at four feet of average depth lands near 13,500 gallons. Those two pools look similar in a backyard and are not close in volume.
When you land between sizes, go up. An underdosed algaecide is the failure mode that costs you a spring, and the surplus keeps fine in a cool dry spot for next season. Which kit chemicals do Greater Cincinnati pools need more of?
City filled pools usually need extra calcium rather than a scale fighter, because Greater Cincinnati Water Works treats to roughly 7 to 8 grains per gallon, below the pool range. Pools filled from a private well in the outer counties usually need more sequestrant for iron and manganese.
This is where a national kit and a local pool part company. The stain and scale preventer in the box is formulated for the average customer, and the average customer in the United States is fighting hard water. Most pools filled from the Greater Cincinnati Water Works system are not. Treated water here runs well under the 200 to 400 ppm a pool wants for calcium hardness, so the more common local problem is soft water pulling calcium out of plaster and grout, not scale forming on it.
Well water changes the picture completely. Plenty of properties in Clermont, Brown and the outer Northern Kentucky counties fill from a well, and those fills can carry iron and manganese that city water does not. On those pools the sequestrant in the kit is doing real work and often needs reinforcing at both closing and opening. The kit is a starting point either way. When should you buy and use a closing kit around Cincinnati?
Buy in late August or early September while selection is full. Use it when water temperature holds consistently below 60 degrees, which in Greater Cincinnati is usually mid to late October. Closing while the water is still warm burns off chlorine fast and invites algae under the cover.
Buying and closing are two different dates. Kits sell down through the fall, so the owner shopping the week they want to close is the one who finds their size gone. The chemicals keep.
The closing date itself is set by water temperature, not by the calendar or by Labor Day. Below about 60 degrees, algae growth slows down enough that your winter chemistry can hold the line until spring. Close in warm September water and you are asking that algaecide to work through weeks of conditions it was never meant to cover. Common questions about pool closing and opening kits
Yes. The chemistry is the same for above ground and inground pools, so the only thing that changes is the kit size you need. Calculate your gallons first, because a round above ground pool usually holds less water than owners assume and an oversized kit dose is wasted.
Yes. A good cover blocks sunlight and debris, which reduces the load on the chemistry, but the water underneath still sits stagnant for months. The algaecide and the stain and scale preventer are protecting the water and the surface, and a cover does neither of those jobs.
The shock oxidizes a good portion of the algaecide before it can do anything, so you lose much of what you paid for. Wait until free chlorine falls back to roughly 1 to 3 ppm, usually the next day, then add the algaecide and circulate it before covering.
Most of them keep well for a season if they stay sealed, dry and out of the heat, though granular shock loses strength fastest. Store them off a concrete floor, away from any acid, and never in the same container. If a product has clumped or changed color, replace it.
No. Pool antifreeze is a non toxic propylene glycol product made for the plumbing lines, so it goes in the pipes to stop freeze damage where water cannot be fully blown out. It never goes in the pool itself, and automotive antifreeze is never safe around a pool.
