Pool Closing Service vs. DIY in Cincinnati
Every year around the second week of August, the questions at our counter on Reading Road change. People stop asking how to keep the water clear and start asking when they need to think about closing. It is the right instinct at exactly the right time, because the pool owners who decide in August get the closing date they want, and the ones who decide in October take whatever is left.
The real question underneath it is usually not when. It is whether to hire somebody or do it yourself. We have closed pools across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky since 1966, and we have also handed plenty of customers a winterizing kit and sent them home to do it themselves, because for their pool that was genuinely the better answer. Here is how we actually think about that decision, including the cases where hiring us is the wrong call.
The short version
- A professional closing is mostly about the plumbing. Blowing the water out of the lines, the pump, the filter, and the heater is the part that prevents the expensive kind of freeze damage, and it is the part hardest to do well without a commercial blower.
- DIY closing works best on above ground pools with simple equipment, and gets riskier as the system gets more complicated. A heater, an attached spa, a salt cell, or an auto cover moves the odds sharply toward hiring somebody.
- Timing matters more than most owners expect. Close when the water holds under 60 degrees, which in our area usually falls between late September and the third week of October, not on the first cold weekend.
- Never fully drain an inground pool for winter. Our clay soil holds groundwater, and an empty shell can float or a liner can shrink past the point of return.
- Freeze damage almost never shows up in December. It shows up in April, when you open the pool and find a cracked skimmer or a split pump housing that has been waiting all winter.
What does a professional pool closing actually include?
A professional pool closing balances and shocks the water, lowers it to the right level for your cover type, blows every drop out of the plumbing lines and equipment, plugs the returns, drains and stores the pump and filter internals, adds winterizing chemicals, and installs the cover. The plumbing work is the part that justifies the visit.
Most people picture a closing as putting the cover on. The cover is the last twenty minutes. Everything that matters happens before it, and the order is not negotiable, because each step depends on the one before it.
Our crew starts with the water itself. Balanced water sitting under a cover for five months is stable water. Unbalanced water is a chemistry experiment running unattended in the dark, and it stains, scales, or turns a liner brittle while nobody is watching. Calcium, pH, and alkalinity get corrected first, then the pool gets shocked and treated with a long-acting algaecide.
Then comes the part that is genuinely hard to replicate at home. Every line running between the pool and the equipment pad gets cleared with a commercial blower until it is pushing air, not mist. Returns get plugged, the skimmer gets a gizmo or a plug depending on the setup, and non-toxic pool antifreeze goes into the lines that need it. The pump gets drained and its drain plugs come out and go in the basket so they are not lost by spring. The filter gets drained, and on a DE or cartridge system the elements come out and get cleaned rather than sitting wet in a tank all winter. If there is a heater, it gets drained and blown out too, because a heat exchanger is the single most expensive thing on the pad to crack.
The water level comes down last, and only to where your cover type requires. Then the cover goes on, gets tensioned or bagged, and the crew walks the perimeter looking for the things owners never see, like a settled paver at the shallow end or a section of coping that has started to lift. What does closing your own pool really take?
Expect three to five hours for a first timer on a straightforward inground pool, plus a shop vacuum or air compressor capable of clearing the lines, winterizing plugs sized to your fittings, a winter chemical kit, and a cover in good condition. The chemistry and the cover are easy. The plumbing is where DIY closings fail.
Nothing about closing a pool is mysterious, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The steps are published everywhere, including on this site, and a careful homeowner with the right equipment can do a good job. What people underestimate is the gap between clearing a line and clearing a line completely.
A shop vacuum on blower mode will move air through a return line. Whether it moves enough air to push out the water sitting in a low spot forty feet away, under a patio, is a different question, and you will not find out the answer until April. The same goes for a small pancake compressor. It has pressure but not much volume, and volume is what actually clears a wet line. This is the honest reason we get calls in the spring from people who did everything right on paper.
The other underestimated piece is the cover. A solid cover needs a working cover pump and somebody willing to check it after every heavy rain and every thaw, because a few inches of standing water is hundreds of pounds pulling on the anchors. A mesh safety cover is far less work through the winter, but it has to be tensioned correctly in the fall or the straps chew on the anchors all season.

When does closing your own pool make sense?
DIY closing makes sense on above ground pools with short runs of flexible plumbing, on pools with simple single pump and filter setups, and for owners who already have real air volume available and have closed the pool before. It makes far less sense on any pool with a heater, an attached spa, a salt system, an auto cover, or long buried runs.
We would rather tell you the truth here than sell you a service you do not need. An above ground pool with a pump and a cartridge filter sitting three feet from the wall is a genuinely simple closing. The lines are short, they are above grade, and you can see whether they are empty. Plenty of our above ground customers have closed their own pools for a decade without a problem, and they buy their kit from us every September and that is the whole relationship.
The picture changes as equipment gets added. A heater doubles the number of things that can crack and hides most of them inside a cabinet. A salt cell has to come out, get inspected, and get stored somewhere that does not freeze. An attached spa has its own plumbing and usually a spillway that traps water where nobody thinks to blow it out. Any one of those is manageable. Three of them on the same pad is where a Saturday turns into a Sunday and a mistake gets expensive.
There is also a simple practical test. If you are not certain what every valve on your pad does, or you have never seen the pool closed by anyone, have it done professionally once and watch. What goes wrong when a pool is closed badly in this climate?
Cracked skimmers, split pump housings, ruptured heater exchangers, and failed underground lines are the four failures we see most often in Greater Cincinnati, and all four trace back to water left somewhere it could freeze. Our repeated freeze and thaw cycles cause more damage here than a steady deep freeze would.
Cincinnati does not have the coldest winters in the country. What it has is worse for pools. We swing above and below freezing over and over from December through February, and every one of those swings is another chance for trapped water to expand, relax, and expand again. A pool in a climate that freezes solid in November and stays there is under less mechanical stress than one that thaws every ten days.
The skimmer is the classic casualty. Water left standing in the throat of the skimmer freezes, expands, and cracks the housing, usually along the back wall where nobody can see it. The pool holds water fine all winter under the cover, then loses it steadily starting in May and the owner spends two months blaming the liner. A skimmer gizmo, which is a hollow bottle designed to absorb that expansion, costs almost nothing and prevents most of it.
Underground lines are the ones that hurt. A return line that runs under a patio or a walk and holds a low spot full of water can split, and finding the break means cutting concrete. This is where our clay soil compounds the problem, because heavy clay holds water against the pipe and moves with the frost instead of draining. It is the same soil behavior that makes pool construction choices matter so much for Ohio winters in the first place.
One more that surprises people. Draining a pool too far, or entirely, is its own failure. Vinyl liners shrink when they are dry and cold, and a liner that has been sitting empty through a Cincinnati winter frequently will not stretch back to fit in the spring. Fiberglass and concrete shells have a different problem, which is groundwater. Clay holds it, hydrostatic pressure builds under the shell, and an empty pool can lift out of the ground. Leave the water in the pool. It is doing structural work.
When should you close a pool in Greater Cincinnati?
Close once the water holds under 60 degrees and is staying there, which in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky usually means late September through the third week of October. Closing before the water cools invites algae under the cover. Waiting until a hard freeze is forecast risks damage before the crew can get to you.
Water temperature is the trigger, not the calendar and not the air temperature. Under about 60 degrees, algae goes dormant and the chemicals you add at closing stay effective for months rather than burning off in six weeks. Close a warm pool in early September because the kids went back to school and you have created the ideal conditions for a green pool in April, sealed in the dark where you cannot see it happening.
The other end of the window is a scheduling problem more than a physics problem. Our service calendar fills from the top down, and the last two weeks of October are the busiest of the year across every pool company in the region. Homeowners who call after the first hard frost warning are competing for the same handful of slots, and at that point the honest answer from anyone is that you are on a list.
What we tell customers is simple. Book the date in August or early September for a closing in the second or third week of October, and keep swimming in the meantime. September in this part of Ohio is frequently better swimming weather than late June. Does the answer change for an above ground or semi inground pool?
Yes. Above ground pools are the strongest DIY candidates because the plumbing is short and visible, though they need an air pillow and careful water level management. Semi inground pools sit between the two and follow the inground rules for anything buried, including the water level and the buried plumbing.
On an above ground pool, the main winter enemy is ice pressing outward against the wall. An air pillow floated under the cover gives the ice somewhere to go, which is why we push them on every above ground closing kit that leaves the store. The water level comes down below the skimmer and return, not to the floor, because an above ground liner depends on water pressure to stay seated against the wall. Owners who drain them too far in the fall are the ones fighting wrinkles in the spring.
A semi inground pool is the one people get wrong, because it looks like an above ground pool from the deck side and behaves like an inground pool everywhere it is buried. The buried portion of the wall sits against the same frost heaving clay as an inground shell, and the plumbing is often partly buried too. Treat the exposed side like an above ground pool and the buried side like an inground pool, which in practice means the plumbing gets the full blowout treatment. On sloped Cincinnati lots, the buried side is frequently the downhill side that collects water.
How do you judge a pool closing service?
Ask what the closing includes in writing, whether they blow the lines with a commercial blower or a shop vacuum, whether winterizing chemicals and plugs are included or extra, whether they will note equipment problems they find, and whether the same company opens the pool in the spring. Vague answers on the plumbing question tell you the most.
Closings vary far more between companies than customers expect, and the difference is rarely visible on the day. Two crews can put an identical cover on an identical pool and only one of them cleared the lines properly. You find out six months later. So the questions worth asking are the ones about the invisible work.
Get the scope in writing and read what is not on it. Some closings include the winter chemical kit and some sell it separately. Some drain and store the filter internals and some leave a wet cartridge in the tank. Ask directly whether the heater gets drained, because a heater skipped is the most expensive omission on the list. Ask what happens if they find a problem, and whether you get told about a lifting piece of coping or just a cover and an invoice.
Continuity is worth more than most people weigh it. A company that closes your pool in October and opens it in April owns the outcome in a way that two different companies never will. If it comes up clean in the spring, the closing did its job, and if it does not, there is one phone number to call.
Whatever you decide, get your winter chemicals right. Common questions about closing a pool in Cincinnati
No, and draining it is one of the more expensive mistakes a pool owner can make here. You lower the water below the skimmer and return fittings, which is usually six to eighteen inches depending on your cover type, and no further. A vinyl liner left dry and cold through a Cincinnati winter often shrinks past the point where it will stretch back into place, and an empty fiberglass or concrete shell can lift out of the ground when groundwater builds up under it in our clay soil. The water in the pool is holding the structure down.
A straightforward inground closing runs about two hours with a two person crew, and an above ground pool is usually closer to an hour. Pools with a heater, an attached spa, a salt system, or an automatic cover take longer because each of those has its own winterizing sequence. A first time DIY closing on the same inground pool typically takes three to five hours, mostly because of the plumbing and the learning curve on plug sizes.
It depends on the manufacturer, so read your specific terms rather than assuming. What is common across most pool equipment warranties is an exclusion for damage caused by improper winterization, which means a pump or heater that cracks from water left in it is generally not a warranty claim regardless of who closed the pool. Some manufacturers ask for documentation of professional service. If your equipment is newer and still under coverage, that is worth checking before you decide.
You get algae. Closing while the water is still above roughly 60 degrees means the pool stays warm enough under the cover for algae to keep growing, and the winter chemicals you added burn off long before spring. The pool then sits in the dark for five months with nothing controlling it. No. A properly closed pool has empty lines and empty equipment, so running the pump would pull water back into the system you just cleared and undo the entire closing. This differs from a pool left open through winter, which is a different strategy that requires running equipment continuously through freezing weather and monitoring it closely. Once you close, the equipment stays off and drained until spring.
The closing decision is really a question about how much of your pool’s plumbing you can see.
