Cyanuric Acid Explained: How Much Pool Stabilizer You Need

Cyanuric acid is the reading most pool owners never look at until August, and by then it has usually decided how the rest of their season is going to go. It goes by three names on a store shelf, which does not help. Stabilizer, conditioner, and cyanuric acid are the same chemical. Whichever word is on the bucket, its job is to keep the sun from destroying your chlorine before that chlorine gets any work done.

We have been testing water at the counter on Reading Road since 1966, and the pattern almost never changes. A customer brings in a sample in late July, the free chlorine reads fine, the pool is cloudy anyway, and the stabilizer comes back at 90 or 110 ppm. Nothing is broken. The pool has simply been on tablets since Memorial Day, and nobody told them that every tablet leaves something behind.

The short version

  • Cyanuric acid shields chlorine from ultraviolet light. Without it, an outdoor pool can lose most of its free chlorine in a single sunny afternoon.
  • An outdoor Greater Cincinnati pool should hold 30 to 50 ppm. Below 20 you are feeding the sun, and above 80 the chlorine you paid for works slowly.
  • You do not have to add stabilizer for it to climb. Trichlor tablets and dichlor shock both carry cyanuric acid, and a full season of tablets can add 30 to 40 ppm to a mid-size pool on its own.
  • Free chlorine needs to run near 7 or 8 percent of the cyanuric acid reading, so a pool at 100 ppm needs roughly 7 ppm of chlorine to behave like a pool at 40 ppm needs 3.
  • Nothing removes cyanuric acid except dilution. Draining part of the water and refilling is the only real fix, and on our clay soil it is a partial drain, never a full one.

What does cyanuric acid actually do in pool water?

Direct answer

Cyanuric acid bonds loosely to chlorine and shields it from ultraviolet light. An unstabilized outdoor pool can lose roughly half its free chlorine within about an hour of midday summer sun. With 30 to 50 ppm of stabilizer in the water, that same chlorine lasts most of the day.

Think of it as sunscreen for chlorine. Sunlight breaks the chlorine molecule apart, and on a clear July afternoon in the Ohio Valley it does that fast. Stabilizer holds part of your chlorine in reserve and releases it as the working chlorine gets consumed, which is why a stabilized pool holds a steady reading through the day instead of falling off a cliff by three in the afternoon.

The tradeoff is the part nobody mentions at purchase. The same bond that protects chlorine also slows it down. Chlorine held by cyanuric acid is not instantly available to kill algae or bacteria, so more stabilizer means your sanitizer works less aggressively. That is a fair trade at 40 ppm. It stops being fair well before 100.

How much cyanuric acid should a Cincinnati pool hold?

Direct answer

Hold 30 to 50 ppm in an outdoor pool in Greater Cincinnati. Anything under 20 ppm means the sun is burning chlorine faster than you can replace it. Anything over 80 ppm means you should be planning a partial drain rather than adding more product.

Our swim season here runs from roughly Memorial Day to late September, and the stretch that matters is the six or seven weeks of high sun from early July through mid August. That window is the reason 30 to 50 ppm is the target rather than zero. It is also the window where tablet users climb past 60 without noticing.

If your reading is genuinely low, adding stabilizer is straightforward. Roughly 13 ounces by weight per 10,000 gallons raises cyanuric acid about 10 ppm. Granular stabilizer dissolves slowly, so put it in a sock in the skimmer or broadcast it with the pump running and give it several days before you retest. Trust your label over any chart, and never dose a number you have not measured. The same rule that governs chlorine dosing by pool size applies here: know your gallons first.

Why does cyanuric acid climb when I never add stabilizer?

Direct answer

Because stabilized chlorine products contain cyanuric acid. Trichlor tablets add roughly 6 ppm of it for every 10 ppm of free chlorine they deliver, and dichlor shock adds about 9. Cyanuric acid never evaporates or burns off, so it accumulates all season while the chlorine it came with gets used up.

Run the arithmetic on a real backyard. An 18 by 36 inground holds somewhere near 25,000 gallons. A pound of trichlor a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day is about 15 pounds of tablets, and in that volume of water that lands somewhere around 30 to 40 ppm of added cyanuric acid across the season. Start the year at 40 and you finish it near 80 having never once bought a bucket of stabilizer.

City fill water contains no cyanuric acid at all, which means every ppm in your pool arrived in a product you carried home. That is worth knowing, because it makes the number predictable instead of mysterious.

What happens when cyanuric acid gets too high?

Direct answer

Your chlorine stops acting like chlorine. Free chlorine needs to sit near 7 or 8 percent of the cyanuric acid reading to sanitize properly, so a pool at 100 ppm needs about 7 ppm of free chlorine to do what 3 ppm does at 40. Test strips still read normal while algae takes hold.

This is the cloudy pool with a perfect chlorine reading, and it is the single most frustrating call we take in August. The strip says 3 ppm, which looks fine, except that at 110 ppm of stabilizer, 3 ppm of chlorine is functionally weak water. Green haze shows up along the shady end, the owner shocks it, it clears for two days, and it comes back. More shock does not solve it, because shock is not the missing ingredient.

You will hear this called chlorine lock. The phrase is misleading. Nothing is locked, and no product unlocks it. The chlorine is present and merely slow, and the only thing that changes that is lowering the stabilizer. How do you lower cyanuric acid in a pool?

Direct answer

Dilution, and nothing else. Draining part of the pool and refilling drops cyanuric acid in direct proportion, so replacing a third of the water cuts the reading by roughly a third. No chemical on any shelf removes it, and the products that claim to are not worth your money.

The math is honest and simple. A pool at 90 ppm that has half its water replaced comes back near 45. Most of the corrections we walk people through are smaller than that, a quarter of the volume out and fresh water in, then a retest a day later once everything has mixed.

Draining in this part of Ohio deserves real caution, and this is where local ground conditions stop being a footnote. Our clay holds water after a wet stretch, and a pool sitting in saturated soil can float or shift if you take too much water out. A vinyl liner is its own risk, because a liner that dries out shrinks and will not seat correctly when you refill. Two rules keep this uneventful. Drain partially, never completely, and do it during a genuinely dry run of weather rather than the week after a spring storm. If you are not sure how much your pool can safely give up, ask before you pull the plug. One local bonus worth knowing: winter often does part of this job for you. A mesh safety cover lets rain and snowmelt into the pool all winter, and pools that overwinter under mesh frequently open in May with a noticeably lower stabilizer reading than they closed with. A solid cover with a pump on top keeps the same water, so the number you closed with is the number you open with. That difference alone changes how a season should be planned, and it is one of the things we check on every pool opening and closing we handle.

Do hot tubs and indoor pools need stabilizer?

Direct answer

No. Cyanuric acid only protects chlorine from sunlight, so an indoor pool or a covered hot tub gets no benefit from it while still paying the penalty of slower sanitizing. Never add stabilizer to a spa on purpose.

Spas still accumulate it, because most spa owners dose with dichlor and dichlor carries cyanuric acid. In a few hundred gallons, that builds quickly. This is a large part of why spa water gets drained and refilled every three or four months rather than nursed along, and why a tub that suddenly needs constant shocking is usually telling you the water is simply worn out. Anyone shopping our hot tubs hears the same advice on delivery day.

When should you test cyanuric acid during an Ohio season?

Direct answer

Twice at minimum. Test at opening, so you know what carried over the winter, and again in mid July after a month or two of tablets. Test a third time before closing if you run tablets all season. Weekly testing is unnecessary, because the number moves slowly.

The test itself is different from the rest of your panel. Cyanuric acid is measured by turbidity, not color. You mix the sample with a reagent that clouds the water, then look down a tube until a black dot disappears, and the level where it vanishes is your reading. It is accurate within about 10 ppm on a good day, and the test strips sold for this particular reading are the least reliable strips in the box. That is why a 90 can look like a 50 to a homeowner right up until the pool starts misbehaving.

Common questions about cyanuric acid and pool stabilizer

What is a good cyanuric acid level for a swimming pool?

For an outdoor residential pool, 30 to 50 ppm is the working target. That is enough stabilizer to protect chlorine through a full day of summer sun without slowing the chlorine down noticeably. Indoor pools and hot tubs do not need any, since there is no sunlight to protect against. Once a pool climbs past about 80 ppm, the practical answer stops being a number to hit and becomes a plan to dilute.

Can you lower cyanuric acid without draining the pool?

Not reliably. Cyanuric acid does not evaporate, break down in sunlight, or get consumed the way chlorine does, so the only dependable way to lower it is to replace some of the water. Rain, splash-out, and backwashing dilute it a little over time, which helps a pool that is slightly high. Products marketed as cyanuric acid reducers are inconsistent at best, and we do not recommend spending on one instead of a partial drain.

Is it safe to swim in a pool with high cyanuric acid?

High cyanuric acid is not a direct hazard to swimmers at the levels backyard pools reach. The risk is indirect. Because it makes chlorine act more slowly, the water is less able to handle bacteria and algae, and a pool that reads a normal chlorine level may not actually be sanitized. If your stabilizer is high, hold free chlorine near 7 or 8 percent of that reading until you can dilute the water.

Do chlorine tablets raise cyanuric acid?

Yes. Trichlor tablets, the standard 3 inch pucks used in floaters and feeders, are stabilized chlorine and add roughly 6 ppm of cyanuric acid for every 10 ppm of free chlorine they deliver. How long does it take stabilizer to dissolve in a pool?

Granular cyanuric acid dissolves slowly, usually over two to five days with the pump running. Put it in a skimmer sock or a mesh bag rather than dumping it in the water, and do not backwash the filter for a couple of days after adding it. Retest about a week later, not the next morning, or you will read a number that has not finished mixing and be tempted to add more.

Cyanuric acid is one of the few pool readings that only moves in one direction on its own. Chlorine goes up and down all week, pH drifts and gets corrected, but stabilizer climbs quietly from spring to fall and waits for somebody to notice. Test it at opening, test it again in July, and know which of your products are adding it. That is the whole discipline.
