How Much Chlorine to Add to Your Pool, by Pool Size

More people ask us this at the counter on Reading Road than any other pool question, and it usually arrives in the last week of June with a jug in one hand and a used test strip in the other. How much do I actually add? Nobody can answer that honestly without two numbers first: how many gallons the pool holds, and what the free chlorine reads right now. Everything after those two numbers is arithmetic, and it is arithmetic you can do standing at the skimmer.

We have been selling and servicing pools in Greater Cincinnati since 1966, and the most common dosing method we see is still the scoop and hope. Pour something in, wait, look at the water, pour more. That approach costs you one of two ways. Either you are chronically low and the pool turns on you over a hot weekend, or you are chronically high and burning through product to solve a problem you did not have. Below is the same math we walk through with customers, sized for the pools people actually own around here, and adjusted for what an Ohio Valley summer does to chlorine.

The short version

  • Free chlorine should read 1 to 4 ppm at all times, and 2 to 4 ppm is the working target for an outdoor pool in an Ohio summer.
  • You cannot dose a pool you have not measured. Rectangle pools: length times width times average depth times 7.5. Round pools: diameter times diameter times average depth times 5.9.
  • To raise 10,000 gallons by 1 ppm takes roughly 10 fluid ounces of 12.5 percent liquid chlorine, about 2 ounces of 73 percent cal hypo, or about 2.4 ounces of 56 percent dichlor. Your product label is the final authority.
  • A stabilized outdoor pool here typically loses 1 to 3 ppm a day in July, and more after a hot weekend with a full pool of swimmers, so daily maintenance dosing is normal, not a sign something is wrong.
  • Shock is a calculated dose, not a scoop. Subtract free chlorine from total chlorine to get combined chlorine, multiply that by 10, and that is the free chlorine level you need to reach.

What free chlorine level should a Cincinnati pool hold?

Direct answer

Hold free chlorine between 1 and 4 ppm, and aim for 2 to 4 ppm on an outdoor pool through a Cincinnati summer. Below 1 ppm the water is not reliably sanitized and algae gets a foothold. Above about 5 ppm you are wasting product and can start bleaching liners and swimwear.

Free chlorine is the portion still available to do work. Total chlorine counts that plus the chlorine that has already reacted with sweat, sunscreen, leaves, and everything else the pool takes in. When people say their chlorine reads fine and the water still smells sharp, they are almost always reading total, not free. That sharp smell is not chlorine doing its job. It is chloramine, the spent byproduct, telling you the pool needs more chlorine rather than less.

The reason to sit at 2 to 4 rather than scraping along at 1 is that this climate does not hold a level steady. A July afternoon in the 90s with strong sun and eight kids in an above ground pool can pull a full point off in a few hours. Starting the day at 1 ppm means finishing it at zero. Starting at 3 means finishing the day still protected, which is the whole point of the range.

How do you figure out how many gallons your pool holds?

Direct answer

For a rectangle, multiply length times width times average depth times 7.5. For a round pool, multiply diameter times diameter times average depth times 5.9. For an oval, use 6.7 instead of 5.9. Average depth on a sloped pool is the shallow end plus the deep end, divided by two.

This is the step almost everyone skips, and skipping it makes every number after it meaningless. A dose that is right for 10,000 gallons is roughly triple what a 24 foot round above ground pool needs and roughly a third of what a large inground pool needs. Same jug, same scoop, wildly different results.

Write your number on a piece of tape and stick it inside the pump house or the lid of your chemical bin. You will use it every week for as long as you own the pool, and it does not change unless you change the pool. How much chlorine raises free chlorine by one part per million?

Direct answer

Per 10,000 gallons, raising free chlorine by 1 ppm takes about 10 fluid ounces of 12.5 percent liquid chlorine, about 2 ounces by weight of 73 percent cal hypo, or about 2.4 ounces of 56 percent dichlor. Scale that to your own volume, then confirm against the label, since strengths differ by product.

Chlorine products are not interchangeable by volume, because they are not the same strength and they do different things to the rest of your water. This table gets you in the neighborhood per 10,000 gallons, per 1 ppm of rise:

Two practical notes on that table. First, tablets are for holding a level, not fixing one. A three inch trichlor tablet weighs about 8 ounces and gives it up over several days, so if you are down to zero on a Saturday morning, a tablet will not save the weekend. Reach for liquid or a granular product and let the tablets carry the baseline afterward.

Second, the label wins every argument with this table. Manufacturers change concentrations, and liquid chlorine in particular is weaker the longer and hotter it has been stored. If you buy liquid, buy it fresh and store it out of the sun. We keep our pool chemicals turning over for exactly that reason, because chlorine that has been sitting through a heat wave is not the strength printed on the jug.

How fast does a Cincinnati summer burn off chlorine?

Direct answer

Expect a stabilized outdoor pool here to lose roughly 1 to 3 ppm of free chlorine per day in July and August. Heavy swimmer loads, a heat wave, and the organic load a thunderstorm washes in all push that higher. An unstabilized pool in full sun can lose most of its free chlorine in hours.

Sunlight is the main thief. Ultraviolet light breaks chlorine apart quickly, which is why an unprotected pool can read fine at nine in the morning and read nothing by lunch. Heat compounds it, because warmer water speeds up every reaction in the pool, including the ones consuming your sanitizer. Late July in the Ohio Valley delivers both at once for weeks at a time.

Then there is what falls in. The pop up thunderstorms that roll through here most summer evenings do two things to chlorine at once. They dilute the water with rain that carries no sanitizer, and they wash organic debris off the deck and out of the trees into the pool, which the chlorine then has to work through. On the older lots around Anderson Township, Delhi, and Mount Lookout, where mature trees hang over the water, that second effect is bigger than most owners expect. Test the morning after a storm rather than assuming yesterday’s reading still holds.

Swimmers matter too, and more than people like to hear. Every person in the pool brings sweat, sunscreen, and body oils, and all of it consumes chlorine. A quiet Tuesday and a Saturday cookout with a dozen kids are not the same pool chemically, and dosing them the same way is how Sunday turns cloudy. How does cyanuric acid change how much chlorine you need?

Direct answer

Cyanuric acid shields chlorine from sunlight, so an outdoor pool holding 30 to 50 ppm of it needs far less chlorine each day than one holding none. Push it much past 50 and the opposite problem starts: the chlorine present becomes sluggish, and you need a higher free chlorine reading to get the same sanitizing result.

Think of cyanuric acid as sunscreen for your chlorine. Without it, an outdoor pool in July is pouring sanitizer into a bucket with a hole in the bottom. With 30 to 50 ppm of it, the same dose lasts through the day instead of through the morning. That is why an indoor pool and an outdoor pool with identical volumes have completely different chlorine appetites.

The trap is that stabilizer accumulates. Every trichlor tablet and every scoop of dichlor adds a little more, and nothing in normal operation removes it. Feed tablets all season without checking, and by August you can be sitting well above 50 ppm wondering why 3 ppm of free chlorine no longer keeps the water clear. The rule of thumb most of the industry works from is that free chlorine needs to be around 7 or 8 percent of the cyanuric acid reading to stay effective. At 100 ppm of stabilizer, that means holding roughly 7 to 8 ppm of free chlorine, which is a losing game.

Nothing removes cyanuric acid except dilution, so the fix is partial drain and refill. Test it at opening and again in midsummer, particularly if tablets are your main feed. It belongs on the same testing rhythm as calcium hardness, another number that moves too slowly to notice and too far to ignore.

How much chlorine does it take to shock a pool?

Direct answer

Measure total chlorine and free chlorine. The difference is combined chlorine. Multiply combined chlorine by 10, and that is the free chlorine level you need to reach to break it apart. Subtract what you already have, then dose for that rise using your pool volume and product strength.

Here is that worked out for a common case. Say you have a 24 foot round above ground pool at roughly 11,900 gallons. Total chlorine reads 3.0 ppm and free chlorine reads 2.4 ppm, so combined chlorine is 0.6 ppm. Ten times that is 6 ppm, and you already have 2.4, so you need a rise of about 3.6 ppm. At roughly 2 ounces of cal hypo per 10,000 gallons per ppm, that is about 2 ounces times 1.19 times 3.6, or a little under 9 ounces. That is a real number you can weigh out, and it is a very different thing from emptying a one pound bag because the bag says one pound.

Shock after sundown. Adding a large dose at two in the afternoon in July means the sun destroys a good portion of it before it finishes the job, which is how people end up shocking twice and still smelling chloramine on Monday. Run the pump overnight, and retest in the morning before deciding anything.

One caution specific to granular products. Broadcast them slowly over the deep end with the pump running, and never dump cal hypo directly onto a vinyl liner or into a skimmer with tablets already in it. Undissolved granules sitting on vinyl will bleach it, and mixing product types in a confined space is genuinely dangerous. If the water is far enough gone that shocking twice has not fixed it, that is the point to have someone look at it rather than keep adding. How much chlorine does a saltwater pool need?

Direct answer

The same 1 to 4 ppm of free chlorine as any other pool. A salt system makes chlorine rather than replacing it, so you adjust the generator’s output percentage and its run time instead of pouring a dose. Salt level usually belongs somewhere around 2,700 to 3,400 ppm, and the manual for your specific system is the authority on that.

Salt pool owners are often surprised to hear they still need to think about chlorine at all. The generator is a chlorine factory, not a substitute for chlorine, and the water still has to test in the same range. What changes is the control you turn. Instead of measuring a dose, you raise the output percentage or add pump run time, then retest a day later to see where it landed.

Two things trip people up here. Cold water slows a salt cell down, so a chilly stretch in May or late September can leave a pool short even at the same setting that worked in July. And salt cells cannot keep up with a real shock demand, which is why nearly every manufacturer expects you to keep a supplemental product on hand for algae recovery and for opening. A salt pool is a lower effort pool most weeks, not a no effort pool.

What changes at opening and closing?

Direct answer

Both ends of the season need more chlorine than a normal week, for opposite reasons. At opening you are clearing whatever grew under the cover all winter. At closing you are leaving water unattended for months, so it goes into the winter sanitized and balanced rather than merely covered.

Around here, opening usually means water that spent March and April doing whatever it wanted under a cover, plus a top off that diluted everything measurable. Expect the first dose of the season to be a large one, expect to test again the next day, and do not swim on the strength of a single reading taken twenty minutes after adding anything. Chlorine needs a full turnover through the filter before a test means much.

Closing is the one people shortchange. A pool that goes under the cover with free chlorine at zero has five months to grow whatever it likes before anyone looks again, and that is how a routine May opening becomes a two week cleanup. Balance the water first, then chlorinate, then cover. Common questions about pool chlorine levels

How much chlorine do I add to a 10,000 gallon pool?

It depends entirely on how far you need the level to move. To raise free chlorine by 1 ppm in 10,000 gallons, plan on roughly 10 fluid ounces of 12.5 percent liquid chlorine, about 2 ounces by weight of 73 percent cal hypo, or about 2.4 ounces of 56 percent dichlor. Test first, work out the gap between your current reading and your target, then multiply. Adding a fixed amount on a schedule without testing is how pools end up either green or bleached.

How long after adding chlorine can you swim?

Once free chlorine has come back down to 4 ppm or below and the water has circulated, swimming is fine. For a normal maintenance dose with the pump running, that is usually a few hours. After a full shock treatment it often means waiting overnight and testing in the morning. The safe move is to test rather than watch the clock, because volume, product type, and how hard the pump is running all change the answer.

Why does my pool smell like chlorine even though the level tests fine?

That smell is chloramine, which is chlorine that has already reacted with sweat, sunscreen, and other organics and has nothing left to give. It means the pool needs more chlorine, not less, which is the opposite of what most people assume. Test total chlorine alongside free chlorine. The gap between the two is your combined chlorine, and if it is above about 0.5 ppm it is time to shock.

Can I add chlorine and shock at the same time?

There is no reason to, because shock is simply a large dose of chlorine. Adding a maintenance dose and a shock dose together just makes the total dose bigger than you calculated and harder to predict. Never combine different chlorine products in the same bucket, skimmer, or feeder either. Mixing product types, particularly cal hypo with trichlor, can react violently.

How often should I add chlorine to my pool in the summer?

Most outdoor pools in this region need chlorine added every day or every other day through July and August, whether that comes from a tablet feeder working steadily or from a measured dose you add yourself. Test two or three times a week at minimum during the hottest stretch, and always after a heavy storm or a busy weekend. A pool that only gets attention on Saturdays spends part of every week unprotected.

None of this requires a chemistry background. It requires knowing your gallons, reading free chlorine rather than total, and treating a dose as a calculation instead of a pour. Do those three things and the pool mostly takes care of itself, even through the worst stretch of an Ohio Valley August.
